When you get a decade-plus of experience under your belt, you tend to want to receive adequate compensation for your hard-earned skills.
I'm not talking about wheelbarrows of cash, but at least something respectable that puts food on the table and a roof overhead. Alas, many employers would rather have you bring all of that experience without paying for it. They want steak, but only if they can get it for the price of hamburger. I am beyond hamburger rates, and when asked what my salary requirements are, I tell the truth for a family man trying to make a better life for his kids while covering the bills.
This form letter, from way back in June 2010, is a prime (rib) example. Community Impact News (which I have interviewed with twice for editor gigs) asked what I wanted and I responded in kind. And they decided to go in a cheaper direction. How did I know that? I worked with several people they did hire who would work for hamburger pay. And by last count, two of the three people they hired from the Killeen Daily Herald no longer work at Community Impact Newspaper.
